Orthodontics certainly plays an important role in achieving a beautiful smile; but did you know that braces can also be beneficial to your overall health and wellness?
Gum and Periodontal Disease
Very likely you are aware of what gum disease is and how it affects your daily life. Many people have a regular routine of brushing and flossing; however they are still dealing with the complications that come with gum disease. This is sometimes caused by misaligned teeth creating areas for bacteria to build up. These areas are difficult to keep clean and are often missed because of it.
With the use of orthodontic treatment the misaligned teeth are re-positioned into a more proper position, thereby making the teeth easier to keep clean with regular brushing and flossing.
If left untreated, gum disease (noticeable at the presence of bad breath, red and swollen or bleeding gums, heightened sensitivity to temperature and painful chewing) can cause over-all health problems that go far beyond the mouth. Gum and periodontal disease have been linked to heart disease, heightened blood sugar, and preterm deliveries in women.
Orthodontic treatment can prevent you from a variety of pain that can be caused when these issues go untreated.
Clenching and Grinding
Misaligned teeth can cause too much stress on the jaw. Over time this can lead to dysfunction of the
Temporomandibular Joint The TMJ or "Jaw Joint". Another term for misalignment of the teeth is malocclusion.
This basically means that when you chew, your teeth are not coming together in the pattern your teeth were designed for. Correcting malocclusion allows your bite and chewing pattern to improve and keeps teeth from wearing down unevenly. Without proper occlusion, your teeth can eventually weaken and be more susceptible to chipping and breaking off. This can lead to infection, creating the need for root canal therapy or even in the loss of the tooth.
